Job Summary:
A Foreman is a working professional who directly interfaces with the work crews. Assists in the daily supervision of the golf course maintenance operations, and in the absence of the Superintendent, he/she will assume temporary management responsibilities. This key position requires solid skills and understanding concerning all aspects of golf course maintenance and properly supervising the crew.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
- Guides the work of other golf course maintenance staff.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Lays out and directs the construction of greens, tees, and fairways.
- Supervises the mowing, watering, and maintenance of trees, greens, fairways, and related areas.
- Maintains records.
- Prepares or assists in the preparation of the annual budget and work program priorities.
- Prepares periodic schedules of maintenance activities, prepares reports, and attends meetings.
- Supervises the planting, fertilizing, and maintenance of turf.
- Supervises the planting, pruning, and care of plants, shrubs, and trees.
- Maintains and makes minor repairs on golf course equipment.
- Recommends the selection, advancement, grievance resolution, discipline, and discharge of supervised staff.
- Provides input and recommendations for performance evaluations.
- Must possess thorough knowledge and understanding of all tasks relevant to all subordinate staff.
- Train staff on established procedures and techniques so that staff can properly perform their assigned functions in a safe manner.
- Performs tasks that are necessary to keep maintenance facility and equipment clean, organized, and safe on a daily basis.
- Inspects all equipment and tools that are assigned to specific tasks and reports any deficiencies to the Equipment Head Mechanic.
- Fills in to perform all functions and routine golf course maintenance activities as directed by listed supervisors.
- Become thoroughly trained in the proper procedures required to perform each task before performing each task.
- Must be able to help in all irrigation matters, including repairs.
- Must be able to substitute as a chemical applicator.
- Performs related work as assigned.
- Bi-lingual skills are a plus but not required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of the principles and practices of horticulture, groundskeeping, chemicals, and greens keeping.
- Knowledge of constructing and maintaining golf course tees, fairways, and greens.
- Knowledge of the production and maintenance of the types of turf used on golf courses. Knowledge of the characteristics and proper uses of various fertilizers, soil conditioners, herbicides, pest control methods, and materials, drainage control methods, and watering and irrigation systems, including wells, pumps, and automatic controls.
- Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions required of the work.
- Ability to plan, organize, assign, direct, and inspect the work of subordinates.
- Ability to communicate effectively and maintain work records and prepare reports.
- Ability to estimate time and materials for work projects.
- Skill in the use of microcomputers and some associated programs and applications necessary for successful job performance.
Experience and Education:
- Possession of a high school diploma or an equivalent recognized certificate and three years of experience, including golf course maintenance activities or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Training in agronomy, horticultural operations, golf course maintenance, or a related area may be substituted for the required experience.
Work Environment & Physical Requirements:
- Ability to perform heavy physical labor. May be required to work in an environment that includes such activities as bending, lifting, stooping, kneeling, climbing, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, and grasping for up to 5 hours without sitting.
- May need to lift up to 50 lbs. frequently.
Registration, Certification, or Licensure:
- Must possess a valid driver’s license and be able to drive various types of equipment, including golf carts and utility vehicles.
