Reeves County Library Hosts Corey Recko for a Deep Dive into New Mexico’s Colfax County War

Reeves County, TX — August 21, 2024 — The Reeves County Library is gearing up for a remarkable event that will bring a piece of New Mexico's storied past to the heart of Pecos. On Tuesday, November 12, 2024, at 2:00 p.m., acclaimed author Corey Recko will present his latest book, The Colfax County War: Violence and Corruption in Territorial New Mexico. The event promises to be an insightful exploration of one of the most tumultuous periods in the American West.

Corey Recko, known for his award-winning works on historical events such as Murder on the White Sands and A Spy for the Union, will discuss his new book which is the culmination of sixteen years of research. The Colfax County War delves into the violent clashes and political corruption that plagued New Mexico during the late 19th century.

At the center of Recko’s presentation is the infamous gunfighter Clay Allison, who is buried in Pecos. Allison's role in the Colfax County War adds a local dimension to this historical narrative, making the event particularly significant for Pecos residents. Recko’s discussion will shed light on Allison’s involvement in the conflict and the broader implications for the region.

The Colfax County War began in 1875 with the assassination of Reverend F.J. Tolby, a vocal critic of the corrupt Santa Fe Ring. This event set off a chain reaction of violence, including lynchings and gunfights, which would come to define this turbulent era. Recko’s book explores these events in detail, from the initial murder to the federal government’s eventual intervention in 1878.

Recko’s research paints a vivid picture of a territory rife with lawlessness and corruption. His previous books have garnered praise for their engaging narrative style and thorough research, and The Colfax County War is expected to continue this tradition.

The presentation will include a Q&A session where attendees can engage directly with Recko and gain deeper insights into his findings. Additionally, there will be an opportunity to purchase signed copies of The Colfax County War.

This event is free and open to the public, making it an excellent opportunity for history buffs, local residents, and anyone interested in the rich and complex history of New Mexico. The Reeves County Library encourages all interested parties to attend and learn more about this fascinating period of American history.
